Thembekile Phylicia Makhubele: Building Futures, Strengthening Communities, and Transforming Youth Through Football
November 20, 2025
In a world where opportunity often depends on geography, resources, or exposure, few leaders rise with the courage to bridge the gap for rural youth. Thembekile Phylicia Makhubele is one of those rare leaders — a woman whose life is deeply rooted in service, empowerment, and unwavering integrity. As a mother, a public servant, a community builder, and the founder of Phylimak FC, Phylimak Sports, and the Malamulele Sports Development Soccer League (MSDSL), she has become a powerful symbol of hope and possibility for the youth of Malamulele and surrounding villages.
Her mission is unmistakably clear: to use sport, mentorship, and education as tools for transformation.
A Childhood Shaped by Leadership, Creativity, and Community Service
Thembekile’s journey started long before she founded her first football club. Growing up as the last-born daughter in a pastoral and business household, she was raised in an environment where leadership, discipline, and community service were woven into daily life.
She was the kind of child who naturally gravitated toward building, organising, and uplifting others. From starting a netball club in primary school to forming a youth band that performed at weddings and church events, her early years were filled with initiative and creativity. She even created Thembi’s Dance Group, providing children aged 8–10 a platform to perform at social events.
Her father co-founded Xitlhelani Primary School, further instilling in her a deep belief in education and community development. And with her mother actively involved in business and church activities, it’s no surprise that Thembekile grew into a woman who leads with compassion, purpose, and resilience.
“I’ve always loved helping people,” she reflects. “But life also taught me that healthy boundaries are essential for growth, impact, and balance.”
Laying the Foundation for a Movement: Phylimak FC & Phylimak Sports
In 2013, driven by a desire to uplift rural youth through sport, Thembekile founded Phylimak FC, a football club designed not merely for competition but for holistic youth development. Over time, Phylimak Sports expanded into a structured empowerment initiative offering:
- Daily training and mentorship for more than 70 registered players
- Community tournaments and soccer clinics
- Player scouting for SAFA-affiliated teams
- Coaching and referee development workshops
- Plans for a future Phylimak Soccer Academy
- A bursary fund for talented but financially disadvantaged youth
What makes Phylimak truly extraordinary is not just the training — it’s the values embedded in every session. Discipline, leadership, teamwork, and responsibility are taught with as much emphasis as ball control and fitness.
“We’re not just producing players,” she explains. “We’re shaping responsible young leaders.”
A League Designed for Transformation: The Malamulele Sports Development Soccer League
In 2024, Thembekile took another bold step by launching the Malamulele Sports Development Soccer League (MSDSL) — a private, community-driven football league that began with 40 teams and later evolved into a well-structured competition of 25 teams across the U13 to U19 age categories.
The league has quickly become the heartbeat of youth football in the region. Its impact is felt through:
- Increased access to structured competitions
- More scouting opportunities
- A reduced rate of idleness, school dropout, and substance abuse
- Empowered local coaches and match officials
- A growing sense of pride and identity across participating villages
The MSDSL is not just a league — it is a movement, a platform that brings discipline, professionalism, and hope to rural sports.
Addressing a Real Problem: Lack of Pathways for Rural Talent
South Africa is full of talented young players, but rural areas often lack the structure and exposure necessary to nurture that talent. Phylimak FC and the MSDSL are filling that gap.
Many youth in Malamulele long for opportunities to play, learn, and excel — yet they face limited coaching, poor facilities, and no clear pathway into professional structures.
Under Thembekile’s leadership, these challenges are being dismantled with determination and vision.
“Our mission is not just to produce athletes,” she says. “We want to restore dignity, confidence, and purpose.”
