Thabang Shinners portrait

In a world that often measures success by speed and scale, Thabang Shinners has chosen a different path — one rooted in patience, skill, and purpose. The Founder and CEO of Thaplanka (Pty) Ltd is a self-taught carpenter and entrepreneur from Bloemfontein whose handcrafted wooden creations have become a reflection of artistry, resilience, and community transformation.

“When I began, I tried to do everything myself — from designing and building to marketing and delivery,” Thabang recalls. “It wasn’t easy, but it taught me that the journey is as important as the destination.”

The Journey Begins: Curiosity Meets Creativity

Thabang’s story began with a curious mind and busy hands. From a young age, he was fascinated by how things were made — taking apart and rebuilding furniture, gadgets, and tools around the house. His father’s dedication to hard work and practicality planted the seeds of craftsmanship that would later define his career.

Without formal carpentry training, Thabang taught himself through trial, error, and endless learning. Using borrowed tools and reclaimed materials, he began crafting simple pieces for friends and family. Over time, his precision and passion attracted attention — and Thaplanka was born.

What Makes Thaplanka Different

Every Thaplanka piece tells a story — not just of design and material, but of people and purpose. “We don’t just make furniture,” Thabang explains. “We make pieces that inspire connection, pride, and identity.”

Thaplanka’s work stands out for its attention to detail, timeless design, and use of locally sourced wood. Every product is crafted with intention — merging creativity with sustainability and ensuring that each piece is built to last.

Solving Real Problems through Craftsmanship

For Thabang, Thaplanka is more than a business — it’s a solution. He saw two pressing challenges in his community: a lack of job opportunities and practical skills among youth, and the limited availability of authentic, locally made furniture. Thaplanka bridges both gaps by offering employment, mentorship, and on-the-job training while producing high-quality local products.

“Our aim is to prove that African hands can create world-class products,” Thabang says proudly. “And at the same time, we empower young people with skills that last a lifetime.”

Overcoming Challenges and Early Lessons

Starting from scratch was far from easy. “I had no formal carpentry background and very few tools,” Thabang admits. “Everything I know came from self-discipline, observation, and continuous learning.”

In the early days, he handled everything — production, customer service, delivery, and marketing. It was overwhelming, but it taught him to appreciate teamwork and the importance of collaboration.

"Now, I value collaboration and mentorship more than ever. Success is shared — not achieved alone."

Staying True to Values

For Thabang, integrity and quality are non-negotiable. “If a project requires me to compromise on my values, I’d rather walk away. Thaplanka was built on honesty and authenticity — that’s what keeps our customers’ trust.”

Vision for the Future

In the next few years, Thabang envisions a fully equipped Thaplanka workshop and retail outlet, expanding into export markets, and launching a skills training center where unemployed youth can master carpentry and entrepreneurship. “We want to turn passion into sustainable livelihoods,” he says. “If I can help even one young person believe that their hands can create their future, I’ve done my job.”

Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

“Start small. Stay consistent. Believe in your vision even when it feels impossible. Don’t wait for perfect conditions — use what you have and keep learning along the way. Growth is a process, not an event.”

The story of Thabang Shinners and Thaplanka (Pty) Ltd is more than a business success — it’s proof that with faith, skill, and community, one person can build something truly lasting.
