From Casteel Village to Courtroom Excellence: The Rise of Rhulani Ubisi-Tshabalala

From Casteel Village to Courtroom Excellence: The Rise of Rhulani Ubisi-Tshabalala

January 13, 2026

Rhulani Ubisi-Tshabalala is a woman who embodies resilience, discipline, and quiet strength. An Attorney, Notary, and Conveyancer, she is the Founder and Managing Director of Ubisi R Attorneys Inc, a law firm built on integrity, accessibility, and service excellence.

Her story is not one of shortcuts or privilege—but of focus, faith, and fearless reinvention.

Rooted in Humility, Raised for Greatness

Rhulani grew up in Casteel, a rural village in Bushbuckridge, raised in a large and loving family as the fourth of seven children. Educated entirely in public schools from Grade 1 to Grade 12, she learned early that success is earned, not handed over.

Her father, a truck driver, treated her like a princess, while her mother—a teacher and strict disciplinarian—ensured structure, discipline, and accountability.

“My upbringing taught me humility, resilience, and hard work from a very young age,” she reflects.

Those values would later become the foundation of her legal career.

Making the Law Accessible

As an Attorney, Notary, and Conveyancer, Rhulani specialises in Property Law and Conveyancing, ensuring the lawful and secure transfer of property ownership. Her firm also provides Notarial services, including antenuptial and postnuptial contracts, as well as the authentication of documents for clients working or travelling abroad.

What sets Ubisi R Attorneys Inc apart is not just legal expertise—but personalised, hands-on service.

“We don’t just process documents,” she explains. “We educate our clients, guide them step-by-step, and ensure they fully understand the legal journey they are on.”

In an industry often perceived as intimidating and inaccessible, her firm brings clarity, transparency, and peace of mind.

Turning Discouragement into Direction

Starting out was far from easy. As a general attorney, Rhulani faced intense competition and bias. Some clients preferred male attorneys; others preferred white attorneys. The rejection was painful—and at times, financially devastating.

“There were moments I struggled to pay my office rent,” she admits.

Instead of quitting, she pivoted with purpose. She stepped back, returned to studying, and wrote her Conveyancing and Notary exams. That decision changed everything.

By specialising, she distinguished herself, rebranded her firm, and positioned her practice for sustainable growth.

Leading with Integrity and Purpose

Rhulani is unapologetic about her values.

“I do not compromise my core values. Integrity is non-negotiable,” she says. “I would rather lose a client than lose my moral compass.”

This unwavering commitment to ethics has become her firm’s strongest currency—earning trust, respect, and long-term success.

Her leadership philosophy extends beyond profit. She is deeply passionate about mentorship, especially for young aspiring legal professionals from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Building a Centre of Excellence

Over the next 3–5 years, Rhulani envisions opening at least four additional branches, employing more attorneys, candidate attorneys, and paralegals.

“There is a serious shortage of employment opportunities in the legal field,” she explains. “I want my firm to be a centre of excellence and opportunity.”

Her daily motivation comes from the people she leads—the employees, mentees, and communities that look to her for guidance.

“Knowing that my leadership directly impacts their futures keeps me going every single day.”

Words of Wisdom for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

Her advice is powerful and practical:

“Start before you feel ready. Perfect conditions never come. Learn, fail, adapt, and get up again. Protect your reputation, manage your finances wisely, and never compare your beginning to someone else’s success.”

A book that shaped her financial mindset is Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki, reinforcing the importance of long-term thinking and ownership.
